Big monsters and tiny snacks: we play King of New York

To kick off 2017 with some gaming goodness, we decided to invite a couple of good friends for wine, snacks and a boardgame we had not played in a while: King of New York. This game is an evolved version of the original, King of Tokyo, with some extra elements added.

The basic premise is that each player is a huge monster terrorising the city of New York, with monsters vying with each other and trying to eliminate each other to become the most destructive creature in the city. Dice rolls and extra cards aid the players as they move through various neighbourhoods and destroy buildings and military units.

The tone of the game is light-hearted and fun, but still quite competitive, and we had a blast playing it. Our guests for the evening, Hennie and Lizari, were new to the game, but they quickly caught on to the gaming mechanics (Lizari, in fact, won the game), and expressed a desire to play this again in the future.

Monsters? Check. Wine? Check. Ready to play!
Huge monster tokens on a tiny board really give an impression of immense scale.
Check out Disco King Kong!

Each player has a score card with turning wheels to help keep track of health and victory points - one of our favourite aspects of the game.
And of course, what is a board game night without some epic snacks!
